BIRTHDAYS & HOLIDAYS

While we encourage to acknowledge students’ birthdays, actual birthday celebrations for students are not allowed at school during instructional time. Parents/Guardians may recognize their child’s birthday by sending in a store-purchased treat to school to be shared with the class.  Birthday treats are welcomed during the students’ lunch time in the multi-purpose room or at dismissal at the end of the school day.  Please bring or drop off any treats to the office counter labeled with your child’s name and teacher. The office will make sure that it is given to the classroom teacher.  Neither balloons nor candles are permitted at any time in the building, as they may cause the fire alarm to go off.

Suitable educational activities will be provided for specific holiday celebrations(Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween). If, for religious reasons, you’d prefer not to have your child participate, please let me know.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

There are several ways we can communicate to ensure your child’s success.

  • TUESDAY FOLDERS - Check your child’s backpack every day for important papers and homework.  Please ensure you check the folder each Tuesday and sign that you have done so. Mass family phone messages and emails will also be sent periodically as reminders of important events. Please be sure we have a current telephone and/or email address on file to receive these messages.

  • BLOOMZ APP - The best way to communicate with me is through Bloomz app as it allows me to message you reminders and important information.  You can also message me anytime with any concerns or questions.

  • Ortwein also maintain an active website (www.ortweinelementary.com) and Facebook Page as means to communicate with families.

  • PHONE: (702) 799-2680

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL

ARRIVAL

All gates open at 8:55 am. As there is no supervision prior to 8:55 am, students are not permitted to arrive prior to this time.

Fourth graders will walk through the gate that leads to the playground to the left of the Multi Purpose Room. Students will walk directly to their classrooms where I will be waiting to greet them. The gates will close at 9:10 am and students arriving after this time will go through the front office. Students will be considered tardy after 9:10 am.

DISMISSAL

The 4th and 5th grade classes will be dismissed from the gate to the left of the Multi-Purpose Room (same gate as the morning arrival). Bus riders will be dismissed by me from the line. Students attending Safe Key, walkers, bike riders, and siblings responsible for younger students will be permitted to leave the line at 3:21 pm after checking out with me. Students who are not picked up by 3:30 pm will be brought to the Front Office. Students not picked up by 3:45 will be sent to Safe Key for a $10 charge at the family’s expense.

ATTENDANCE & TARDIES

A day lost in school is learning that is lost and can rarely be retrieved through makeup work. When a child is absent from school a written notice from the parent/guardian must be sent to school within 3 school days after the child returns from the absence. The note should contain the following information: 1. The first and last name of the student; 2. The date(s) the student was absent; 3. The reason the student was physically or mentally unable to attend; and 4. Signature of parent or guardian.

A doctor’s note may be requested to ensure the student is healthy enough to return to school. An excused absence is when the student is physically unable to attend school due to health or mental reasons. An unexcused absence is when the student is physically well, but not in school.  If the school is not notified of the reason of the absence, the absence is recorded as unapproved. Students arriving after 11:05 a.m. are considered absent for a half day. Students leaving before 1:26 p.m. are considered absent for a half day. Elementary students with unapproved absences in excess of 20 days during the school year may be referred for educational neglect and/or retained in the current grade.  The importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized. Please see CCSD Regulation 5113 for more information.
